Young The Giant ~ Presents ~ "In The Open" Sessions

I guess I no longer need to tell you about who 'Young The Giant' are.  The Newport Beach, California band has made a giant splash all over the music world this past year, most notably with the "emerging artist" slot at this year's MTV Video Music Awards with a performance of, "My Body", that probably put them on the map and into the mainstream for good.   Well for all you fans new and some old, here is something that will make you fall in love with their musical talents even more.  I stumbled upon something amazingly special today.  They just launched a brand new site for a group of live sessions the band is calling, In the Open.  These sessions are videos shot of them performing songs from different locations throughout their travels.  You can watch each session and read descriptions of where and how they shot each one, all narrated by lead singer, Sameer Gadhia and friend, photographer, and tour manager at the time, Alex Shahmiri.  The sessions are a brilliant idea in my opinion and the final product which gives different takes on each song made for incredibly entertaining results.  Check it out...

"Your Side"

"I Got"

"Strings"

"Apartment"

"Islands"

"Got Made Man"

"Cough Syrup"

"Guns Out"

Pretty awesome stuff, right?  I thought so.  I think the sky is the limit for these guys.  I am excited to see what 2012 brings for the band, and hope they come through Saint Louis again soon!  I have a feeling it will be a lot more crowded than last April when I saw them at The Firebird.  You can read the full narration and check out all the videos on the actual site HERE.  Have a good weekend!

UPDATE: (07/20/12)Starting this week, Young the Giant will be giving away free downloads of the 'In The Open sessions' starting with "I Got". You can download them right at the 'In The Open' page (http://intheopen.youngthegiant.com/) and read more about howand where the band shot each session. Each Friday they will release a download of the next session in order and the best part is there is no required action. No Facebook like, no retweet, no sign up list, nothing! Enjoy!

8.  The Rapture - "Sail Away"
7.  Reptar - "Stuck In My Id"
6.  Wavves - "King Of The Beach"

The 'Foo Fighters' concert I went to at the Scottrade Center in Saint Louis this month was one of the best shows I have ever seen.  The sing-a-long with the house lights up during "Best Of You" was epic.  I have been rocking this song out non-stop ever since trying to relive that feeling.  Great times...

Exclusive Album Stream: 'We Were Promised Jetpacks' - In The Pit Of The Stomach

On Thursday, November 3rd, Scottish punk band, 'We Were Promised Jetpacks' (WWPJ), will be putting the rock into the Old Rock House in Saint Louis.  But, prior to that on October 4th, the band is set to release its second album, In The Pit Of The Stomach, a follow-up to their highly successful debut, These Four Walls, a CD that barely left my car all last year.  The band has been somewhat quiet lately after the recording of this latest album this past November (2010), and now it has been revealed why on the band's website.  Guitarist, Michael Palmer, in January was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma, and has been battling this cancer by undergoing multiple chemotherapy treatments over the last 8 months.  Just today, he released a statement that said, "In January this year I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, which is essentially cancer of the immune system.  I started chemotherapy treatment once every two weeks, beginning in February and finishing up in May.  It was a treatment known as ABVD, where I get four different chemotherapy drugs every couple of weeks, designed to destroy my old broken immune system so that my body builds itself a nice shiny new one.  Chemotherapy is fucking awful.  For three months I was suffering from fatigue, a little hair loss and Vomiting.  That’s a capital V for a reason.  In June, I had 17 sessions of radiotherapy to top it all off and then that was me.  All better!  Here’s where I say that everyone who works at, or is associated with the Beatson Oncology Centre in Glasgow is a superhero."  Truly an inspirational story that can be read in full over on the band's website HERE.  So with that in mind, this album release brings a sort of comeback and a greater celebration.  The band is back to doing what they love, touring and making music.  And what great music they make!  Check out the full exclusive album stream from the link below.  And stay tuned to insideSTL.com over the next couple of weeks for my interview with the band leading up to their show at the Old Rock House.

By the way, while you are over on the WWPJ website be sure to pick up a FREE download of, "Act On Impulse", the first song that was released from the new album.  This song does not have much of Adam's signature hard driven vocals like a lot of their older songs, instead its more just awesome climatic instrumental rock.  The hard rock version of an 'Explosions In The Sky' track.  Great stuff!

DCFC - "Stay Young, Go Dancing" - Video Premiere

This Sunday night, October 2nd, 'Death Cab for Cutie' (DCFC) will take the stage at The Pageant in Saint Louis on tour in support of their latest album, Codes and Keys.  This morning, the band just released the official video for the closing track off the album, "Stay Young, Go Dancing".  I am sure there will be plenty of dancing going on inside The Delmar Loop's premiere concert venue this weekend.  Until then, enjoy the new video below that takes front man Ben Gibbard's marriage with actress/singer Zooey Deschanel and applies it to a broader context of lovers.  "I liked the idea of moving backwards," Gibbard told Spinner. "In the beginning you see this couple who are in their 70's, and throughout the video they move through these corridors and become younger and younger and I think it's a rather touching way to show these two people."  "With all of these songs that I write, I want them to have as much universal appeal as possible and certainly don't feel like I want to undermine the complexity of the lyrics at times and make that happen."
